Howard Wilcox met with a terrible accident yesterday morning that may result in the loss of his left arm, if nothing more serious. He and Howard Nicholson were out quail hunting in the vicinity of Smartsburg. Both had been out shooting, Nicholson was untieing the horse to drive off and Wilcox was getting into the road cart when there was a discharge of one chamber of the gun, which he had under his arm and the entire charge settled in his arm and shoulder. He got into the cart and Nicholson drove him rapidly to this city to Dr. Ensminger's office and that physician, assisted by Dr. John Ensminger dressed the wound, relieving it of a large number of shot, small pieces of bones, gun wadding, etc. Mr. Wilcox sat up and suffered all this agony without a murmur, displaying a vast amount of nerve. Dr. Ensminger has hopes of saving the arm but it may yet have to be amputated. – kbz
